Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranayake was one of the greatest UNP Party
leaders from 1947-1953 in Sri Lanka. He
was Minister of Local Governments in the Cabinet of Hon. D.S. Senanayaka’s
Government, 1948-1952. He resigned from
UNP and established new party named “SRI LANKA FREEDOM PARTY”(SLFP). He became Prime Minister in Sri Lanka in
1956. He introduced many economic
development reforms. He introduced “Import
Substitution Policy”, under which he implemented industrial projects to produce
things which we import. Russia granted
many industrial projects to Sri Lanka.
Later trade union leaders AND THEIR POLITICS destroyed the progressive
capacity of these industries, and even now these industries run at lost, and
Government treasury has to grand fund to these state sector Boards and
Corporations.
A coup of Buddhist monks killed Prime Minister Bandaranayaka
in 1959, as a Buddhist monk fired him with a pistol at his official residence
named as “Araliyagaha Mandiraya”. There
was no any evidence or eye witness expressed by his family members, it was a
sad story.
